Community Victory: CRC Is Closing!
Thanks to YOUR powerful advocacy, the California Rehabilitation Center (CRC) in Norco, CA will close by Fall 2026!
The closure of CRC is a testament to years of community advocacy to reduce the imprisoned population, expose systemic issues in CRC, and highlight possibilities for non-carceral reinvestment in Riverside County.
Our community and coalition partners have connected with loved ones on the ground at CRC, rallied outside of the prison demanding its closure, built relationships with imprisoned comrades, and advocated at the state capitol. This win is a product of sustained people power and a shared commitment towards building a healthier future for us all.
CRC has earned a reputation of toxicity marked by its ongoing unsafe conditions. In 2021, CURB named CRC as the top state prison to close based on a survey of more than 2,000 incarcerated people.
As CRC undergoes closure, CURB urges state officials to:
Facilitate smooth transfers of incarcerated people
Ensure continued access to credit earning, education, and positive programming
Invest $150 million in annual savings from closure into economic development initiatives and social services in Norco and neighboring communities
Pursue community-informed repurposing opportunities to support local and state economies
Recommendations for each of these key areas are laid out in CURB's Prison Closure Roadmap.
Onward together!
