This is how we fight. This is how we win. And we're not done yet.
THIS IS HUGE.
Because of YOU, California just took a major step to block ICE from taking over closed state prisons by passing AB 137.
Over 10,000 letters were submitted by our people demanding the state #CloseCAPrisons and stop ICE in its tracks—and together, we WON a critical tool in that fight.
Yesterday, @gavinnewsom and the California Legislature delivered.
With the signing of AB 137, California now has the power to:
- Sell, lease, or transfer closed prison sites
- Begin leasing immediately—no more endless “warm shutdowns”
- Prohibit any future carceral or detention use
We are deeply grateful to @cagovernor and legislative champions #CALeg for this bold action.
This law gives our state real tools to protect communities and resist federal attacks. This happened because people ORGANIZED and leaders were forced to listen.
But the fight is just gearing up.
ICE is already eyeing Chuckawalla Valley State Prison, closed in 2024. We’re calling on the Governor to use his new authority NOW and stop ICE from turning past failures into future cages.
We celebrate this win and we stay grounded in the urgency of this moment. Our undocumented, unhoused, trans, Black, and brown neighbors are still under attack. California must do more to protect California until the #IceAgeIsOver!
This is how we fight. This is how we win. And we’re not done yet.
