Prop 36 will cost taxpayers at least $26 billion over the next decade in new prison spending—the largest increase in California history. CURB is here to demand a responsible budget, and this is a PRISON SPENDING SCAM that MUST be exposed. We will NOT go back to the era of tough on crime and mass incarceration.
The average per-unit cost of affordable housing in our state is around $300,000. With $26 billion, California could fund the construction of over 86,000 units of affordable housing instead.
Governor Newsom wisely opposes Prop 36, warning that it will NOT address the public safety concerns it claims to. This is the wrong solution to issues like retail theft and drug use. Prop 36 will tear families apart and perpetuate systemic inequality. We need investment in communities, not more incarceration.
