HOLD THESE ASSEMBLYMEMBERS ACCOUNTABLE FOR FAILING TO CONFRONT RACISM

This year, CURB co-sponsored AB 1958 (Kalra), which would have addressed racism in our legal system by improving procedures for establishing a disparity claim under existing law, the California Racial Justice Act (RJA). 

This critical bill died on the Assembly Floor on May 28, when eleven Assemblymembers broke their stated commitment to vote Yes -- all because police unions opposed the bill at the last minute! These are the eleven Assemblymembers who broke their promise, essentially agreeing to let racism go unchallenged in CA courts:

Addis (D-30); Alvarez (D-80); Bauer-Kahan (D-16); Calderon (D-56); Carrillo (D-39); Pellerin (D-28); Wilson (D-11); Valencia (D-68); Gipson (D-65); Papan (D-21); Ransom (D-13)

We must hold these Assemblymembers accountable for turning their back on Black and Brown Californians harmed by racism in legal processes, and for bending to the influence of racist cop unions!

2. Call your Assemblymember's office! Find the phone number for their Capitol Office here. You may use the following script: 

"Hi, my name is [name], and I am a constituent of [Assemblymember's Name]. I am deeply disappointed with the Assemblymember's failure to support AB 1958 (Kalra) on the Assembly Floor. This bill would have made several clarifying changes to the procedures for establishing a disparity claim under the California Racial Justice Act. It is shameful that the Assemblymember bent to law enforcement unions at the last moment rather than confront racism in our state's courts. We will no longer accept this betrayal from elected leaders and will continue to hold you publicly accountable."
