Unlike the past few budgets, this Proposed Budget no longer demonstrates a desire to shrink California’s prison system to reflect the needs of the state.

In the face of a HUGE budget deficit, Governor Newsom must continue to reduce the number of people imprisoned and close more state prisons. Prison closure is key to achieving long term savings so that funding does not have to be cut from vital areas like transportation, environmental protection, housing, and workforce development that actually contribute to safety.

The campaign to #CloseCAPrisons demands that the administration and state legislature adopt a community-informed roadmap (bit.ly/CURBroadmap) to close at least seven more prisons by 2025 as part of this year’s budget process, and take action to reduce CDCR’s out-of-control spending.

Embracing a prison closure roadmap will help ensure that corrections budgets are actually slashed when prisons close, and cost savings are invested in the communities that need resources the most.
