Vote NO on Prop 36 this November
Prop 36 is a prison spending scam threatening to take California backwards. Say NO to #Prop36 this November!
Prop 36 is a proposition on this November’s ballot that would increase punishment for certain criminalized acts in California, including by reversing key provisions of Prop. 47. ‼️ This increase will have devastating impacts on vital programs proven to keep people safe and will significantly increase prison spending, the costs of which impact everyone and are incalculable to our Black, brown, immigrant, and houseless community members.
Prop 47 was a key reform passed in 2014 that contributed to reducing extreme overcrowding in prisons and reallocated savings from reduced incarceration rates to areas that support people after release and support survivors of harm. Since 2016, over $800 million has been allocated across the state for behavioral health treatment and other critical services that promote community safety.
Prop 36 would:
Cut $850 million in the next decade from dedicated funding for mental health, substance use treatment, survivor services, reentry support, and areas that prevent harm from occurring.
Increase prison spending and the number of people in prisons (and jails), costing taxpayers more than $26 billion in prison costs over the next decade— the BIGGEST prison spending increase in California history.
