This is our last chance to prevent ICE from taking over closed prisons.

Earlier this week, advocates and community members sounded the alarm at the California City council meeting over attempts to repurpose the closed former state prison, CA City Correctional Facility, into the largest detention center in the state. 

We are closer than EVER to permanently closing prisons in “warm shutdown” and preventing ICE from using them to cage our people, but we MUST tell Newsom to:

-Fully decommission all prisons in “warm shutdown,” ending the risk of these prisons being reopened as immigrant detention centers and saving millions currently being wasted on maintaining empty facilities.  

-Block ICE from expanding into closed prisons in CA, including FCI Dublin,  California City Correctional Facility, and Chuckawalla Valley State Prison.

-Close at least TWO state prisons, generating an additional $150 million more in annual savings. One prison closure is NOT enough.

-Redirect this wasteful spending into essential public health, housing, transit, and care programs that protect our most vulnerable communities.
