Protect California! Check out CURB's 2025-26 Proposed Corrections Budget Overview
THE TIME IS NOW TO RECLAIM OUR BUDGET AND PROTECT CALIFORNIA

Each year, Governor Newsom releases his Proposed state budget in January, the Revised budget in May, and the Enacted final budget in June. This means that from now until June, we have the power to advocate for a budget that reflects our values.
The Governor’s $18.3 BILLION Proposed Corrections Budget once again misses the opportunity to capture significant savings through additional Corrections cuts, instead cutting from areas like Natural Resources and Environmental Protection. Closing just one more prison could double the funding available for critical wildfire and forest resiliency efforts.
Failure to significantly reduce and redirect funds from the Corrections budget not only results in cuts from vital sectors, but also locks up funding that could be redirected to life-saving resources our communities urgently need.
Incarceration is a budget and policy choice. The state’s own nonpartisan Legislative Analyst’s Office (LAO) estimates that closing five prisons could save at least $1.5 billion in annual operational costs. California can and must close more prisons.
Join us as we push to #CloseCAPrisons and advocate for a budget that affirms the lives of all Californians, especially as we enter the tough year ahead!
