Our state cannot afford wasteful corrections spending while facing deep federal cuts that are already harming our most vulnerable community members this holiday season.
Our communities are struggling to keep their children fed as SNAP delays deepen food insecurity. Our neighbors are sleeping outside as temperatures fall into the 40s. Our loved ones are forced to compromise their health as insurance premiums skyrocket.
According to the Legislative Analyst’s Office (LAO), the state faces an almost $18 billion budget problem in 2026-27 and structural deficits of about $35 billion per year beginning in 2027-28.
The LAO identifies Corrections as one of the largest upward adjustments in spending, despite 4 prison closures.
This report confirms what communities have been saying for years: California cannot sustainably balance its budget without further reducing the size and cost of the prison system.
True public safety looks like protecting our communities from cuts to vital services NOT fueling Corrections spending.
