Final 2026 Budget Action!

Final 2026 Budget Action!

Take Action | May 28, 2026

ALL HANDS ON DECK! Final opportunity this budget season to demand prison closure, expanded pathways for release, & investments in critical social safety net services!

TAKE 1 MINUTE to send a letter to Governor Newsom and Budget Committees TODAY: bit.ly/budgetaction26

UPDATE: Today the Senate has proposed an additional prison closure and we urge the Assembly and Governor Newsom to follow suit! This proposal is a testament to this community’s unwavering advocacy!

The May Revised State Budget threatens to increase CDCr’s budget by an unacceptable $1 Billion compared to last year’s enacted budget — $400 Million more than in the January Proposed Budget — and it completely neglects the opportunity to close additional prisons. It also fails to expand pathways to release for elders, medically vulnerable people, and survivors of staff sexual abuse.

While stuffing CDCr’s pockets, the May Revise budget neglects needed investments in housing, Medi-Cal, Victims of Crime Act (VOCA) services, community-based reentry, and other vital programs that are at risk.

Before the 2026-27 Final State Budget is finalized and released, we must demand prison closure, redirection of funds from prisons into communities, and release of our community members!
