💰As part of final 2023-24 budget negotiations, CDCr was required to produce a capacity report to inform which prisons should be next to close in exchange for @cagovernor’s $360 Million San Quentin construction project. CDCr is expected to submit a final report by November 15th, 2023.
This past September, the preliminary version of this report came out. Sources close to the matter said that a preliminary report CDCr delivered in September received substantial criticism from legislative staff. 🚩They affirmed CDCr intends to argue that California should keep all its state prisons open to ensure adequate real estate for “rehabilitation” needs.🛑
“CDCR has a long way to go in order to better protect the safety and health of incarcerated people. It shouldn’t require an expensive branding exercise like the California Model to ensure basic human dignity and care. CDCR’s final capacity report has yet to be released. They still have the opportunity to alter course and provide the legislature with a concrete prison closure plan. CURB's Prison Closure Roadmap outlines a clear strategy to reduce the number of state prisons and activate billions for communities in need. It’s a blueprint for a stronger, safer California.” -Amber-Rose Howard, CURB Executive Director (from CURB's press release on this topic, read here)
