CURB's Annual Summer Fundraiser is here!
This summer, CURB is working hard to raise $10,000 this month to sustain the organizing, advocacy, and public education needed to close prisons and jails, bring people home, and move public dollars into housing, healthcare, and community-based safety.
Individual donors make this work possible. Your contributions provide the flexible resources CURB needs to respond quickly, organize across prison walls, defend community investments, and coordinate a statewide coalition of more than 100 organizations.
This year, our coalition turned sustained organizing into concrete victories:
Won another prison closure. After two years of inside-outside organizing, California announced the forthcoming closure of the California Rehabilitation Center in Norco. Four state prisons have now closed or been scheduled for closure since 2020, generating an estimated $900 million in annual savings.
Stopped closed prisons from becoming ICE detention centers. CURB helped mobilize thousands of advocacy letters and win passage of AB 137, permanently prohibiting closed state prisons from being reused for detention or any other carceral purpose.
Defended Measure J and Care First investments. CURB became the lead organizational plaintiff in litigation to protect the voter-approved requirement that Los Angeles County invest billions in community services and alternatives to incarceration.
Organized across prison walls. CURB and our partners held 11 outreach days at CRC, connected with approximately 200 loved ones, and brought 93 people into ongoing communication and organizing. We continue corresponding with more than 400 incarcerated people.
Built statewide power. More than 100 advocates and directly impacted leaders joined our annual Face-to-Face convening. Through the Budget Advocacy Rolodex, approximately 50 advocates across 40 organizations helped more than 400 people send 4,200 letters supporting care-first budget priorities.
However, despite the historic recommendation of both houses of the legislature to close another prison, Gov. Newsom failed to act. California continues pouring billions into prisons, jails, and detention while communities face cuts to the services that actually keep people safe.
CURB is preparing the next phase of our work: expanding releases, winning additional closures, resisting jail and detention expansion, and protecting hard-won investments in community care. We need you to face the obstacles that are sure to come.
