While the 2024-25 CA budget includes significant reductions in the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR) budget, the state must go further to concretize the proposed savings enshrined in the budget by closing more prisons. 

The lack of prison closure announcements is an alarming signal that the state is preparing to send California backward to an era of mass incarceration. 

Prison closures and reducing the prison population with safe releases of those incarcerated are shown to be important steps to improve our communities, prioritize those families and communities most harmed by mass incarceration, and address the ongoing budget deficit.
