CCC is Officially Deactivated

CCC is Officially Deactivated

Updates | Jul 10, 2023

The #CloseCAPrisons campaign honors this community win while also recognizing that there is more to be done to ensure that more prisons across the state close safely and efficiently.

This community win comes nearly 2 years after the state initially announced California Correctional Center (CCC) for closure in April 2021.This announcement was met with a lawsuit filed by free residents of Susanville to stall the closure in the name of economic reliance on the prison. This lawsuit disregarded the perspectives of Susanville’s incarcerated residents which made up nearly 1/3rd of the town’s population.

Read about CURB’s efforts to center the voices + organizing efforts of those directly impacted by CCC & shift the narrative on prison closure in our IG highlight called “CCC Victory.”

CCC’s closure process illuminated the many issues with CDCr’s current poor planning and the need for CA to adopt a comprehensive Prison Closure Roadmap (bit.ly/CURBroadmap)

CCC will be kept in ‘warm shutdown,’ mode,  meaning the state will spend $50 million in taxpayer dollars to keeping this prison ‘minimally operational.’

It is crucial that prison closure means that facilities will be shut down permanently and repurposed in ways that meets needs of surrounding communities.

-To date, NO releases have been associated with the closure of CCC or any other state prison closure. Folks have just been transferred to other prisons. When this occurs, incarcerated people’s lives are often deeply disrupted due to CDCR’s harmful policies and practices.

-The state must not only close more prisons, but adopt and better implement legislation that allows for more people to be released.

-Prison closure can create billions in cost savings. These resources MUST be shifted to housing, healthcare, and education: systems of care that actually keep communities safe.
